It’s a koan.
It’s actually a traditional koan by Yunmen, south of Shanghai, born 854CE. He didn’t like people writing down his stuff, yet he created the tradition of koans.
People tend to go on quests - you know, looking for America, looking for God, looking for the answer to the mysteries. But what they’re really looking for is reality, understanding, their relationship with things. And invariably that’s an inward inquiry. It’s in you. In the present. All that stuff that we seek is in us, in the here and now. But we never thought to look there. We thought it would be out there! You lost your way within yourself. So why look out there. The coin that is lost in the river is found in the river.
Tarrant says "The koan reverses the equation that the mind is always trying to solve” An external quest becomes an inward realisation.
It’s a fabulous insight. A gem.
